Homework:

You will be assigned approximately one homework assignment per week. Remember, it is by actually doing the homework problems that you build your mathematical skills. You are encouraged to work together and to make use of my office hours. If somebody helps you with a problem, though, be sure YOU are the one to write it up, and you should then try to work a few similar problems on your own to be sure you understand the concepts.

You should plan to spend 6-8 hours outside of class every week on your homework.

Click here for the homework assignments.

Quizzes

There will be frequent short in-class quizzes given in this course. Most of these will be group activities with open books and notes. You will need to use the information from the lectures to complete these exercises, so be sure to pay attention and ask questions. Every few weeks, there will be the more traditional type of quiz requiring individual, unassisted effort. You will be advised in advance of the closed-book quizzes.

Grading

Your grade will be determined by three exams, a cumulative final exam, homework, and frequent in-class activities and quizzes. The weights of each of these and the dates of the exams are shown below.
Homework 15%
Quizzes/In class activities 5%
Exam 1 15% Wed. Sept. 17, 2008
Exam 2 20% Fri. Oct. 17, 2008
