Mathematics 1823-010 - Calculus and Analytic Geometry I - Spring 2008

Information about Exam III

Exam III will be held in the usual room at the usual time: 10:30-11:20 on Friday Apr. 18. It will start promptly at 10:30, so make sure you're on time. The test will cover sections 4.1-4.5.

The test will have four problems, possibly with several parts each. Calculators or other mechanical assistance are not needed and are not to be used.

Section 4.1 is relatively straightforward: you should know how to find absolute maxima and minima for functions defined on a closed interval. The Mean Value Theorem is also important. Be sure you understand what it says and how it can be used.

Section 4.3 is maybe the heart of this part of the course. You will need to understand clearly the relationships between the graph of f(x) and properties of f '(x) and f ''(x). Section 4.5, on graphing curves, combines everything we have done so far, and it depends heavily on 4.3 and 4.4. Practice these problems, taking one step at a time. You may need to refer to earlier sections of the book.
