At our Department, we usually have good general attendance in the weekly Colloquium. Please take this into account when preparing; we appreciate non-technical talks aimed at a general audience. If your work is on very complicated topics, it may be better to give an overview of the area instead. Keep in mind that a non-expert will usually not be too severely disappointed if a technical subtlety in the auxiliary lemma that you proved last week is left unexplained. Don't punish 90% of your audience for coming to your talk.
If in doubt, please err on the side of caution. Don't show us how ignorant we are ("everyone knows that Besov-Sobolev ultrameasures obey Kasparov's duality law if categorized over bornological fibers"), or overestimate our stamina ("now Theorem 2.1.7 together with formula (71) from slide 32 immediately imply that ..."). It will be so much more pleasant to look into our beaming faces when you are giving us an easy time ("let me remind you that we call a_n convergent to a if for every epsilon > 0 ...").
We look forward to your talk.
