The Mathematics Department at the University of Oklahoma hosted the
tenth annual OU MathFest on Friday, Jan 30, 2009 and
Saturday, Jan 31, 2009 on the OU campus in Norman.
The Mathematics Department acknowledges the generous sponsorship of
the OU Graduate College.
Twenty five undergraduate mathematics majors and prospective graduate students participated in the following events.
The OU MathFest 2009 participants got to hear some cool talks:
- Dr. Jon Kujawa explained the interesting connections that exist between biologists constructing phylogenetic trees, Bill Gates, and stacks of burnt pancakes.
- Dr. Steven Spallone entertained everyone with the mathematics behind juggling.
- Dr. Kimball Martin revealed some things about his experience with secret and not-so-secret codes.
- One of our graduate students, Sarah Marsh, talked about the mathematics of and the controversy surrounding the Monty Hall problem.
- Dr. John Albert gave a riveting account of the connection between mechanical linkages and Chebyshev polynomials.
The OU MathFest attendees also got to chat with current OU graduate students and faculty, and to visit the University History of Science Collection.
