Abstract Much of data science presupposes that points in a point-cloud have been sampled from, or nearby to, submanifolds of an ambient Euclidean space. As such, tools from the geometry of submanifolds are applied to gain knowledge about the structure of the point-cloud. In this talk, I will introduce submanifolds and some basic ideas such as geodesics and covariant differentiation. Nothing more than a minimal calculus background is needed as a prerequisite.
