We will present the theory of L-functions for the special orthogonal groups in the general setting of a globally generic automorphic representation of a maximal Levi subgroup. This is done via the Langlands-Shahidi method in positive characteristic, which is developed from scratch, starting from the basic definitions. Having a solid theory of L-functions available has interesting applications to the representation theory of these groups over a non-archimedean local field, previously available only in characteristic zero.
