Abstract I will talk about families of cusp forms and the equidistribution of their local parameters. This principle shows up in various guises in the orthogonality relations for Dirichlet characters, the trace formula (or the Petersson formula) and the vertical Sato-Tate type theorems. I will also briefly describe my joint work with Emmanuel Kowalski and Jacob Tsimerman that proves a local equidistribution result for families of Siegel cusp forms of degree 2 and increasing weight.
